SSP Stories - Mrs D (QLD Australia) -
Teaching Reading and Spelling in Upper Primary Grades, Queensland.
Mrs D is passionate about educating the whole child, and preparing them for the challenges of high school in this day and age. Many come with varying levels of 'verbal intelligence' in a world of technology and (online) social media, and many are not used to engaging in inquiry learning, and problem solving, or debate.
She sees how independent and confident the SSP activities helps them to become, with many transitioning from quiet, introverted students who may not believe that their thoughts and beliefs are valid, to argumentative, engaged, curious learners !
Weekly spelling tests in Year 6. They partner test, must say the word, give a sentence and say the word again. The student being tested has to draw lines and numbers first and then add sound pics. Words are not marked as correct unless the coding is correct. #itsworking #taSSP #youdabomb
Literacy Rotations always include Monster Routine spelling and an SSP activity.
So we worked on a monster crossword with all our names. Rearranged a few times and settled on this one.
Then they set out doing it using the IPA for each name.
(Each Speech Sound Monster is linked with a phonetic symbol, from the IPA)
